The Park Theatre Presents
SATURDAYS AT THE CINEMA

(L-R): Jimmy Ellison, "Gabby" Hayes," and Bill "Hopalong Cassidy" Boyd
An old-fashioned double feature from the Wild, Wild West kicks off The Park Theatre's free fall movie series. SATURDAYS AT THE CINEMA begins Saturday, September 4 at 7 pm at the Jaffrey Woman's Club on Main Street. The featured westerns star Roy Rogers in "Don't Fence Me In" and Bill 'Hopalong Cassidy' Boyd in "The Eagle's Brood". Sponsors for the Opening Night Double Feature are Peter and Barbara Davis and Harold and Dorothy Davis. The host for SATURDAYS AT THE CINEMA is Mike King, film historian and Trustee of The Park Theatre. Popcorn, candy and drinks are available at all the Theatre showings.
In 'The Eagle's Brood', the notorious bandit "El Toro" saves 'Hopalong' Cassidy's life. 'Hoppy' repays the favor by rescuing the outlaw's orphaned grandson, who had been held hostage high in the mountains by a rival gang. Made in 1935, this western stars George "Gabby" Hayes as the grimy, cantankerous buddy and Jimmy Ellison as his romantic pal. The 'girl' is played by Joan Woodbury, and, of course, the good guys win in the end.
The second Western, 'Don't Fence Me In' stars 'King of the Cowboys' Roy Rogers, Trigger ("the smartest horse in the movies"), Dale Evans, George "Gabby" Hayes and The Sons of the Pioneers who sing their way through the movie. The story is about a resourceful reporter (Dale Evans) who heads west to discover the truth about the notorious badman "Wildcat Kelly". Cole Porter popularized that name that led to the movie in a hit song of the early 1940's. Roy Rogers was the first to perform the song in 1944 at the Stage Door Canteen. The movie was made in 1945 and filmed at Big Bear Lake in California. This particular western is a showcase for the talents of venerable sidekick, Gabby Hayes who stars in both movies.
SATURDAYS AT THE CINEMA continues in October and November with Charlie Chaplin in the 1942 reissue of 'The Gold Rush' on Saturday, October 4 at 7 pm at the Jaffrey Woman's Club. This classic was originally a silent film, first produced in 1920, but Chaplin felt it could be made better and, in a rare move in the film world, he remade the movie to include sound effects, an original music score, and occasional narration by Chaplin. The third and final film in the series is 'Sahara' starring Humphrey Bogart, Lloyd Bridges, Rex Ingram, J. Carrol Naish, and Dan Duryea. This 1943 classic World War II story will be shown on Saturday, November 8th at 7 pm as a special Veterans' Day tribute . One of the most exciting and entertaining films to come out of World War II. the plot concern's Bogie's tank, the Lulabelle. As he and his men retreat from the fall of Tobruk, they pick up a motley crew of British and American survivors along the way and wind up meeting the enemy in the middle of the desert.
