(L-R): George "Gabby" Hayes, Dale Evans, and Roy Rogers
This Wild West movie is about a resourceful reporter (Dale Evans) who heads west to discover the truth about the notorious badman "Wildcat Kelly". Cole Porter popularized that name in a hit song of the early 1940's. Roy Rogers was the first to perform the song in 1944 at the Stage Door Canteen, and the song became so popular that he made the movie based on it. The movie was filmed at Big Bear Lake in California and is a showcase for the spectacular scenery of the American west. This particular movie is also a showcase for the talents of venerable sidekick, Gabby Hayes who also stars with Bill 'Hopalong Cassidy' Boyd in the evening's second movie of the Wild West - "The Eagle's Brood."
The Park Theatre's Film Historian and Trustee Mike King says that Roy Rogers remained supreme as the top Western star from 1943 to 1954. Promoted by Republic Pictures as a rival to Gene Autry, Rogers actually took over Autry's 'throne' when Autry entered military service in World War II. With an ingenious screenplay, the Cole Porter hit tune, and the cast in top form, "Don't Fence Me In," met with the most favorable response of any Roy Rogers Western and proved to be one of Republic's biggest all-time hits.
